How does Ripples of Change Uganda support local communities?
We support local communities by building 20,000L rainwater harvesting tanks that provide clean water for up to 400 people per tank. These projects are community-led and constructed in partnership with local builders and community members. Our project managers on the ground work directly with community leaders to identify where support is most needed. Decisions are based on factors such as current access to water, distance travelled to collect water, and the quality of available water. Alongside our water projects, we provide targeted humanitarian support for individuals and families facing urgent need. Each case is assessed in collaboration with the family to understand their situation, the type of support required, and the expected duration of assistance. All support is delivered to local community members within the region.
How do you ensure donations make a real impact?
We work with trusted local project managers who are involved in both decision-making and the direct delivery of support. This ensures that assistance is provided to the right people in the right way, rather than being distributed as cash. At each stage of project delivery, photographic evidence is collected to ensure transparency and accountability. We also maintain ongoing contact with families and communities directly to understand the impact of our work and ensure support has been effective.
Where do your projects take place?
Our work is primarily based in Kisoro and Jinja, but can extend to other regions across Uganda depending on need. We partner directly with local communities to deliver clean water infrastructure and targeted humanitarian support.
How are water tanks built?
Each tank is built by hand alongside the local community, using locally sourced materials
and shared labour. Materials are delivered by truck to the base of the site, before
community members work together to carry everything up steep terrain to the construction
site.
Construction begins with preparing and levelling the ground, followed by building a
reinforced foundation using cement, sand, and stone. Over several days, layers of steel
mesh, iron reinforcement, and concrete are added to create a strong and durable
structure.
The inside and outside walls are then sealed in multiple layers to ensure the tank is
watertight. Once the structure has set, the roof is constructed using reinforced supports and sealed with cement.
Finally, gutters are installed to channel rainwater into the tank, along with taps and secure
access points to ensure safe, long-term use.

Volunteering with Ripples of Change Uganda was really rewarding. I loved that there was a strong sense of community at each event along with the energy, fun, and a positive atmosphere. Working with Ripples of Change Uganda on building water tanks has been an incredible
experience. I work as a foreman in the construction of reinforced concrete water tanks, where I supervise workers, organizing tasks, and ensure quality work from foundation to completion. My responsibilities include setting, monitoring reinforcement, and supervising concrete mixing, pouring, and curing. The project has greatly improved access to clean water, reducing the distance people travel and improving hygiene.
Personally, I have gained valuable skills, experience, and income which helped to save for my university fees. Working with Ripples of Change Uganda has been positive and I therefore recommend anyone who’s interested in supporting or working with them to get involved. When I first heard about Play for Water Netball Event, it instantly became something I wanted to be a part of. The small act of playing a game that I love, that had a massive outcome- clean drinking water for people in Uganda. Play for Water really hit home for me, when I heard about the small children and the task of fetching water vs learning at school. All children have a right to a fun, rich childhood, with their basic needs met. I am so blessed to be a part of a community that I value and have many friends. It was so easy to reach out to my friends and create a team, what I didn’t expect was the volume of supporters, 1 team turned into 7 teams. The netball community became so invested, that we just kept making more teams. Play for Water is a fun day out for sport lovers and families. The joy of watching our own children cheer and celebrate their parents on the court is a gift I don’t think Ripples for Change Uganda realised they gave us. Play for Water was coordinated and managed by volunteers, received donations for raffles and prizes from local businesses, other people donating their time and skill all for the basic right to have access to clean drinking water. Play for Water was an inclusive event that allowed all skill levels to participate. Creating these events serves all communities, Uganda received clean water, we received the knowledge of how we can all make a difference. It doesn’t take a lot to contribute in your own way. All contributions lead to these significant outcomes that we have the joy of watching through Ripples of Change Uganda’s videos. I am looking forward to the next Play for Water events and encourage you all to be a part of something that is so special.
