BENON

Restoring mobility, independence, and quality of life through targeted medical intervention.

HIS STORY

Benon is an adult male living in a mountainous region of Kisoro, Uganda. Five years ago, he contracted cerebral malaria, which resulted in the amputation of both legs below the knees.

Although he had previously been provided with prosthetic limbs, they were no longer usable due to poor quality and water damage. As a result, Benon was left without functional mobility support and was forced to move by walking on his knees across steep, rocky, and often muddy terrain.

Despite these conditions, he continued to work breaking rocks to earn a minimal income to support himself and his dependents. This placed significant strain on his body and exposed him to ongoing health and safety risks.

Support was initiated to restore mobility, reduce physical hardship, and improve his overall quality of life.

INTERVENTION.

Support for Benon focused on restoring mobility while also providing ongoing assistance to support rehabilitation and overall wellbeing. This has included:

  • Funding for custom prosthetic legs

  • Coordination of medical assessment and fitting through a regional facility

  • Transport to and from medical appointments

  • Accommodation during travel for treatment

  • Provision of food and essential supplies throughout the process

  • Physiotherapy support to assist with mobility and use of prosthetics

  • Purchase of eight sheep to provide a sustainable source of income for Benon and his family

OUTCOME & IMPACT.

The provision of prosthetic limbs has enabled Benon to regain mobility, significantly reducing the physical strain and risks associated with moving on his knees across difficult terrain.

This intervention has not only improved his physical wellbeing but has also enhanced his capacity to engage in income-generating activities, supporting both himself and his dependents. In addition, the purchase of eight sheep has provided a sustainable source of income, helping to strengthen his family’s financial stability and support long-term independence.

Overall, the support has restored a level of dignity, independence, and quality of life that was previously unattainable.

FUNDING & DELIVERY MODEL.

This intervention was funded through direct donations in Australia.

Funds were allocated to cover medical costs, including prosthetic limbs, transport, accommodation, and associated support needs. Additional funds were used to purchase livestock to support long-term income generation for Benon and his family.
