This project was completed in Busanza, Kisoro, Uganda, to provide reliable access to clean drinking water for local households.
In this region, access to safe water is extremely limited, with some families walking up to eight hours a day to collect water from distant sources. The remoteness of the area and the scale of need mean that multiple water points are required to adequately support the community.
A 20,000L rainwater harvesting tank was constructed using locally sourced materials and local labour.
The project was completed on-site in a remote, mountainous community, where access to the site was particularly challenging. Materials were transported to the base of the hill, with trucks requiring multiple unloading and reloading stages to navigate the steep terrain before reaching the top. Each journey to the site takes approximately two hours by vehicle.
This approach ensured:
local employment and skills development
strong community participation in the construction process
long-term sustainability of the infrastructure
This project now provides improved access to safe drinking water for approximately 400 people in the surrounding community.
With families previously spending up to eight hours a day collecting water, this project has significantly reduced the time required and improved access to safer water sources, helping to reduce waterborne disease. However, in this region, one of the most critical challenges is the physical danger associated with collecting water across steep, mountainous terrain.
During one of our visits, an elderly woman fell while carrying water uphill, sustaining a serious hip injury. With limited access to medical care, she has been confined to her bed, relying on young children in the community for support, with one child even having to leave school to care for her. By bringing water closer to households, this project helps prevent injuries like this and protects vulnerable members of the community, making such incidents far less likely in the future.
